Six Months in at VCE

Well it's taken me 6 months to get around to update my blog. So here goes.
The last six months have been the best of my working life so far, working at VCE is challenging/exciting/frustrating sometimes but overall I'm loving it.
I have never been so challenged in my working life, but that's a good thing as that's just what I have needed, I can't say that is always been an easy ride but I'm now feeling that I've got the hang of it.

VMware vShield and my Thoughts and VMTN

Well today I had a day at my home office so I thought I would have a look at the VMware University as I had not really looked for around 12 months and yes there was plenty of new content.
In my experience and in the last 20 plus years its quite extensive the VMware Partner University has to be one of the best channel partner tuition tolls I have ever used, and it just seems to get better and better. Many other companies could learn a lesson from VMware and in fact Veeam have just started there's and I hope will eventually be as good.
So after a look around the site and the new offerings I decided to have a bash at the vShield VMTN module and as usual a very good module it is, and I guess the one thing that struck me was how powerful the product is and just how complicated it could soon get. Once you put into the mix physical servers and firewalls into the mix I could see it becoming a full time job to keep up with it in a large organisation. Please don't take this as a criticism as in the virtual work we do need something as powerful as this and as far as I know there's nothing out there that will integrate into vSphere as well, i just think that they need to think about the physical world and integrating it all into a single product. But I guess we will have to wait for Cisco to do that as I'm sure they must be working on it I just hope that it will integrate into the virtual infrastructure with a descent GUI, that does not take a lifetime to understand.

VMware getting into the Hyper-V management game

So VMware are supporting Hyper-V from within vCenter well I didn't see that one coming, but thinking about it, why not Microsoft can manage vSphere servers from within SCCM with VMM.

I guess it's a play to stop SCCM getting into the play and also allows VMWare to show off how much better there Hypervisor is compared with Hyper-V.

So we have reached the End Of Feburary

So this Year is 2 months down and not really that much to report on my front, still working like made to get my large project finished and can know see the end in site.

But the finish of this project leaves me with an interesting question where know, having been on this large project for the last 6 months not to sure if I fancy going back to the bits of projects that I tend to get between large projects so perhaps it could be time for a change we will have to see, after all the Job market in the UK IT space seems to have picked up considerably since the new year.

I do think that the private cloud is the way forward and unless companies take the bull by the horns then they will be trampled by the big boys.

More Predictions for 2011 (Private Cloud)

So I have been looking over the last couple on months at the Private Cloud and I have to say I do thing that this could well be the year in which it could take off.
Having been very sceptical about the vCloud offering from VMWare, I had a play with it at VMWorld in Copenhagen in one of the breakout sessions and it really opened my eye's as to what could be achieved with this new technology. Then it just so happened that I was asked to look into what we as a company could do from the private could front, this caused me to look about and see what else was happening in the market, and I have to say the VCE alliance do seem to have the right idea.
Since looking about I have noticed that many of the great and good from the Virtual world seem to be migrating the careers to VCE so they must be doing something right. Could this be there Year it could be...

My predictions for 2011

So for what's it's worth here are my thoughts for what is to come in the next 12 months.

My first one would be I think Microsoft will finally realise that there is more work to be done on User Virtualisation, yes they do application and workload virtualisation but they need to do plenty on the user front. My guess would be that they will fix this with an acquisition, possibly Appsense. While I'm on the subject I also think there is a good chance that VMWare are going to purchase RES Software, as I don't think that the RPO software is doing what they hooped.

VMWare will be providing XenApp integration into the View broker. As I have said many times View as a solution is like a stool with one leg, if the answer is VDI then view is great but if you need anything else then look elsewhere.

I see that there will be a large uptake in the VMWare SRM product.
